The Real World

The Real World: San Diego only had one interesting character, Frankie Abernathy. There were these rumors that she wasn't even really casted, and that she was an actress to be part of the show just to make the story interesting. So people debated whether she was really a cutter, a alcoholic and if she had cystic fibrosis.

Whatever the case may be... she did help raise awareness of the life-threatening disease that effects 1 in 3,900 children in the United States. The success rate of the disease isn't high, and unfortunately on Saturday evening, while at her mother's house she passed away.

Difficulty breathing and insufficient enzyme production in the pancreas are the most common symptoms, and thick mucus production — as well as a weak immune system — often results in frequent lung infections, which are treated, though not always cured, by oral and intravenous antibiotics.
Her mother reports that people who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis usually have a hard time during the winter, due to the weak immune system, and this winter was especially bad for Frankie. But she feels that Frankie's experience on the Real World had made her stronger and if it wasn't for the show, Frankie would've gave up a long time ago.

Frankie's mother is setting up a scholarship in honor of her daughter, which fans can send donations to Frankie Abernathy Scholarship Fund, c/o Jackie Langston, 1205 NW Roanoke Drive, Blue Springs, MO, 64015.

This is terrible news. She was my favorite person ever on the real world! I was just researching her on Friday. She was awesome.

We kind of forget that the people on the Real World are real people sometimes. I didn't love her behavior on the Real World but she was a decent person. That is sad news.

That is so sad. I hate to hear about young people dying after being sick. I liked Frankie on the Real World. Thanks for posting.

A close friend of mine lost his mother to this disease. It's horrible to see people go through it.
